Shipping options

There are multiple ways you can ship your vehicle overseas. The first is more common and less costly: container consolidation. The major drawback there is the time spent waiting for other vehicles to be loaded in the container, but the shipping costs may be split between customers.

Another variant is single container transportation. This option is the safest, but considerably more expensive. It guarantees extra protection for your car. If you are shipping a vintage or expensive vehicle or just want to be on the safe side, single container shipment is the best solution.

What do I need to ship my car to Poland?

As Poland is a member of the EU, each imported vehicle is objected to taxation. There are three major tax types in Poland:

  • VAT (23%)
  • Excise tax
  • Importing customs tax, ranging from 3% for car parts and 22% for trucks.

The excise tax heavily depends on the engine’s displacement, varying from 10% to 18.6% for cars with more than a 2000 cc engine. Polish customs (Służba Celna) also set a “recycling fee” for vehicles imported from North America. Prepare approximately 500 Zloty (~$125) beforehand in order to avoid delays with customs.

Documents needed to clear the Polish customs are as follows:

  • Vehicle Title
  • A government-issued ID (passport)
  • Insurance
  • Original Vehicle Registration
  • Proof of Residence (either Polish or American)
  • Bill of Lading
  • Polish Tax ID number.

Also, there is the possibility to ship your car from the USA to Poland duty-free. You are obligated to have a vehicle that was registered at least half a year before importing. In addition, you have to have resided in Poland for at least six months. If these requirements are met, you will have no legal right to resell the imported car during the year, but you can import the vehicle without duty fees.

Specific requirements to clear Polish customs

Vehicles imported from the USA are required to undergo minor adjustments, such as:

  • Speedometer substitution
  • Turn signal alteration (according to EU traffic regulations, each car should have orange turn signals)
  • Exhaust pipes that meet the Polish and EU environmental standards
  • External lighting modifications

Note: these changes can be made after the vehicle arrives at the destination port in Poland. Take these factors into account before registering the car in Poland, as ignoring them may cause delays or may incur additional fees.
